History of Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram also known as Tiruvandrum was once known as “Kingdom of Travancore” between 1729 and 1949. After the 17th century the city came into limelight though it has been trading site for spices, Sandalwood and Ivory in 10th century.
The British never directly controlled the city and it was a princely state. When India got freedom in 1947, Thiruvananthapuram was an independent country but when the political tension rose, it became part of India and finally became the capital of Kerala . In 1962 it also became the home for India’s Space programme, with launch sites and research centres.

Trivandrum (or Thiruvananthapuram) boasts of a large, modern airport with both international and domestic terminals. Trivandrum airport has a capacity for handling around 1.8 million passengers annually. Visa on arrival (VOA) service is provided to citizens from 44 countries. It is located near the seaside and is four kilometres from the city center and near to the Kovalam Beach, which is one of the favourite tourist attractions in the state. International tourists arrive commonly from the middle east and south-east Asian countries; for example, Malaysia, Singapore, Maldives and Sri Lanka. Airlines such as Kuwait Airlines, Qatar Airlines and Emirates Airlines conduct many flights to and from Trivandrum making it easy for international passengers to get in and out of the city. Domestic airlines such as Indigo, Vistara and Spice Jet also have several flights connecting Trivandrum to other cities across India. Travel times from Mumbai are generally 2 hrs with non-stop flights and can go up to 9 hrs with intermediate stops. From New Delhi flying to Trivandrum takes around 3 hours in a non-stop flight.
By Train
The Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station is the largest railway station in the entire southern part of India, connecting Thiruvananthapuram with all of the rest of India. The easiest and cheapest way to reach Thiruvananthapuram is by railways, and a large number of trains at a good frequency provides a very efficient method for travel to the city. Some of the better trains running to Trivandrum are the Netravathi Exp (Mumbai), Anantapur Exp (Chennai), and Sabari Express (Hyderabad).
By Road
Thiruvananthapuram is connected to major towns and cities by NH66. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation runs interstate bus routes that connect Trivandrum to Bangalore, Mysore, Madurai, Kochi and Coimbatore. Kerala contains a good network of modern roads and bus routes that connect different cities and town centres; making bus rides a comfortable, fast and efficient way of getting around in the region. Public transport is a good mode of travel inside the city; there are several state-run buses along with taxis and auto-rickshaws that provide fast transportation inside the city. There is a major bus station at Thampanoor, from where the buses leave the city along with several state highways that serve commuters in the city.
