Kumarakom is a set of small islands perched on the edge of Vembanad Lake known to be the largest lake in Kerala, which is blessed with great weather, beautiful landscapes, waterways and lush greenery. There are long rows of coconut trees giving it a tropical touch.

By Air
Cochin International Airport which is nearly 80 km away and serves as the nearest airport to Kumarakom. Flights of domestic airlines connect Cochin with other Indian cities on a daily basis and flights from international cities also serve Cochin city which helps save time and money for foreign tourists. AC cabs, non AC cabs, and city buses can be hired from Cochin Airport to reach Kumarakom by road.
The second nearest airport is at Trivandrum which is about 171 km away. There are a number of international and domestic flights available from and to Kumarakom. There are also numerous options of public transport available to reach the airport.
Kumarakom lies just 16 km away from the nearest city, Kottayam. The foreign tourists can reach Kumarakom from anywhere outside India, easily where one can fly to Mumbai (Bombay) or Chennai (Madras) from there then take a flight to fly to Kerala where one has a choice of three international airports as entry points, namely Kochi (Cochin), Kozhikode (Calicut), and Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) Airports.

Does Kumarakom have any historical significance?
Kumarakom was involved in many of the fights for supremacy between the local kings in Kerala. There are still remains of a fort wall in Kumarakom. The Taj hotel building also has a piece of history attached to it. The bungalow was built by a British man called Alfred. G. Baker whose family lived there for the next 4 generations and influenced a lot of the things that happened in the area. It was a ruin after they left until the Taj Group took over and converted it into the luxury resort it is now.
What are the special food preparations to be found in Kumarakom?
Two of the major catches for the fishermen in Kumarakom are the Karimeen, also known as the Pearl Spot and shrimp. Many of the local delicacies are based around the two with one of the most popular dishes being the Karimeen Pollichathu, which is grilled Karimeen wrapped in a banana leaf after being prepared with rich spices.
Are there any places in Kumarakom of interest to photographers?
Kumarakom is home to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which is an excellent location for photographers that are interested in birding. A large number of rare, migratory birds can be found here.
