About Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary in Athirapally
The Chimmony wildlife sanctuary is one of the most popular attractions near Athirapally, in the Western Ghats. It covers a lush green area of 85.067 sq km, on the Nelliyampathy Hills. Needless to say, it is a haven for people who enjoy bird watching. In addition, there are 39 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles, 31 species of fish and 14 species of amphibians. There are also a few endangered animals here, such as the tiger, Asian elephant, lion-tailed macaque, wild dog, Indian giant squirrel, slender loris, and the Nilgiri langur.
History of Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary
Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1984, this sanctuary is home to a huge variety of flora and fauna, including nearly 200 species of birds such as the Malabar whistling-thrush, Indian rufous babbler, white-bellied blue-flycatcher, Loten's sunbird and several others. There is a tribal community here as well, the Malaya Tribe, in which 52 families live within the gated sanctuary.Â
