History of Palazzo Pitti

In the year 1549, this property got sold to Medicis and thus it was converted as the primary residence of Grand Ducal Family. The palace went through alteration and enlargement from the year 1560. Bartolomeo Ammannati was the designer of the renovations and extensions that include the grandiose courtyard and two of the lateral wings.

Gardens of Palazzo Pitti

Boboli Gardens are the vast green spaces adjacent to the main palace building. Laid out in the 15th and 16th centuries, the gardens feature oak trees, ornate fountains, and beautiful Renaissance sculptures. It’s one of the most popular places in Florence to soak up the warmth of summer months.

The beautiful design of the monument was done by Filippo Brunelleschi and built under the guidance of his student Luca Fancelli. The original building had only the middle cube which you can find in the current palace.

Palazzo Pitti is a magnificent palace which houses many major museums of Florence. The first floor has Palatine Gallery that has a collection of the paintings from the 16th and 17th century and the Royal apartments that exhibit the furnishing dated back to the 19th century. This collection comprises of very excellent work that includes Rubens, Correggio, Titian, Raphael and Pietro da Cortona.

2) The Royal Apartments

Royal apartments are also on the first floor that has 14 rooms, the designs, the furniture and the overall look of this space which was the residence of Lorraine and Medici families is overwhelming. These rooms have three major historical moments and also style those points to the palace's growth with time.

3) The Gallery of Modern Art

Gallery of Modern Art is located on the second floor of the Palazzo Pitti and has an awesome collection of sculpture and paintings of Italian style that is dated back to the period between the 18th century and World War I. The rooms have exhibits from the romantic, neo-classical period and also from the era of Macchiaioli movement.
