Basilica of Santa Maria Novella and Basilica of Santa Croce are two popular Basilicas one should ensure to include in their Basilica visit. These two places have their relevance and are loved by travelers.
Basilica of Santa Maria Novella
Basilica of Santa Maria is not added in the top 10 list of the people who visit Florence but it is a place that is recommended to be one on the top place. It is one among the major Gothic churches of Tuscany by architecture. Leon Battista Alberta and Fra Jacopo Talent are the ones who have worked on the exterior of this Basilica. The interior of this Basilica is rich with the beautiful art works by Ghirlandaio, Giotti, and Masaccio and of many others too.
The interior of the church looks very vast and is longer than it actually is due to clever coloring of central arches. The layout is a work by Brunelleschi who has designed the Cupola of Duomo. The great works of arts from the masters are also there in the church
Trinity the work done by Masaccio is the earliest paintings demonstrating mastery of his perspective. The painting has portrayed the Virgin Mary as an older and as a mother, not a young girl. The crucifix by Giotto has depicted the crucifixion of Christ on the wooden cross. Filippino Lippi has worked on the Strozzi chapel which is on the right side of main Altair and dedicated to St John. The artists have portrayed some scenes from the life of St John.
Basilica of Santa Croce
It the Basilica which was rebuilt in 1294 for Franciscan order by the popular architect Arnolfo di Cambio. This is the place where one can find the burials of most of the popular men of Florence that include Galileo Galilei, Machiavelli, Rossini and Michelangelo. The Basilica even has Dante’s Memorial but his burial is at Ravenna.
The interior of the Basilica is rich with the beautiful arts by the popular artists of the time. The frescoes by Gaddi, Giotto, and Annunciation by Donatello are must watch in Basilica visit. There is also the memorial of the playwright Giovanni Battista Niccolini who lived in 19th century which was the inspiration for Statue of Liberty. The marble façade of the Basilica is another amazing part of it.
The Basilica visit in Florence is incomplete without these two Basilicas. They offer great environment to pray and also are rich with their architectural and artistic beauty that mesmerizes the visitors.
