Located on the western outskirts of Chiang Mai, Suthep is a district in itself. And, the magnificent temple, called Wat Phra That Doi Suthep nestled on its summit is one of the most sacred temples of the region. History of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Established to enshrine a bone piece from the shoulder of the Buddha, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Temple, Chiang Mai was built in the 19th century by King Keu Naone. The construction of the temples started in 1386, and it is believed that the bone was mounted on a sacred white elephant who climbed the mountain of Doi Suthep, and stopped near the summit. The temple was then founded at the place where the elephant trumpeted three times, laid down and passed away later.
