About Wat Pho in Bangkok
Wat Pho is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok Rattanakosin Island in the Phra Nakhon district. Located along the banks of Chao Phraya River near the Tha Tien Pier, the Wat Pho temple is a regular tourist hub. Also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha and Wat Phra Chetuphon by locals, the temple is famed for its namesake Reclining Buddha. The fifteen meters high and forty-six-meters long Reclining Buddha adorned in golden leaves is incredibly beautiful.
Wat Pho is also famed for its exquisite Thai massages that are famous all over the world. A trip to the temple makes for an ideal day of relaxation. In fact, the Wat Pho massage is recognized as one of the leading schools of therapeutic massage in Thailand. The temple hosts a hundred and eight bronze wishing bowls into which tourists drop pennies to see their wishes come true. This money goes towards assisting the temple and all its monks.
The Wat Pho Bangkok houses three hundred and ninety-four gilded statues of Buddha meditating in the lotus pose. These statues have been collected from all over Thailand and are kept in the temple for preservation. A walk through the intricately decorated murals of Wat Pho leads up to the courtyard that is superbly decorated with Chinese statues and ninety-one stupas adorned with ceramics and colored tiles.
Wat Pho, Bangkok is an immensely appreciated landmark in itself. But it is also quite close to other places of great beauty and significance such as Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. In fact, the Grand Palace is a ten-minute walk away from the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Getting a tour guide for 200 – 400 baht is perfectly worthwhile in a place with so many things to do and places to visit.
