Visit the Trevi Fountain in Rome
Trevi Fountain, also known as the Fontana di Trevi is a fountain that you will find in the Quirinale district, in Rome, Italy. It is one of the many fountains found in Rome, but its significance comes from the fact that it is the largest of the city’s fountains. The elegance of the fountain is another why it is famous, with its design being a marvelous work of beauty.
History and Facts about Trevi Fountain
Standing at 85 feet tall and with water flowing from multiple sources into a large pool at the front, the fountain is truly a work of beauty. In fact, it is the most beautiful and stunning fountain, both in Rome and in the rest of the world.
In addition to being the stunning fountains in the world, the Fontana di Trevi is also one of the oldest fountains. You can trace its history all the way back to the ancient Roman era.
The Statues of the Trevi Fountain
The imposing statues that stand at the Fontana di Trevi are another reason why you should check out this work of beauty. At the center of the fountain, you will find the statue of Oceanus, one of the Titan gods, holding a triumphal arch. According to Greek mythology, Oceanus was the god of the earth-encircling River Okeanos. His statue is a symbol of the fresh water that supplies the fountain.
In addition to Oceanus, there are other stunning statues of Titans at the fountain. These include the statue of Copia, the goddess of Abundance, and the goddess of Health. In addition to the Titans’ statues, the fountain also features a statue of Agrippa.
Coin Throwing in Trevi Fountain
Thousands of tourists from all over the world visit the fountain to experience its beauty and elegance. However, there is another reason why people come to the fountain – to toss coins. According to legend, tossing a coin in fountain ensures you a good fortune, as well as a speedy return to Rome. The coin tossing tradition goes all the way back to the Ancient Roman era, where people would toss a coin and then drink a cup of water from the fountain.
However, the ritual became increasingly popular after a 1954 film, Three Coins in the Fountain. In the film, three American women working in the city toss three coins in the fountain – for marriage, romance, and return to Rome. After the film, the coin tossing tradition became very popular, and almost everyone who visits the fountain tosses a coin.
The Final Put
Among the many other attractions, Trevi Fountain is the best with its elegant design and important historical significance. In addition, by visiting the fountain, you get a chance to experience the coin tossing ritual.
