Best Historical Places In Gujarat

There are several historical places in Gujarat, thanks to the rich cultural heritage of the state. Monuments have been preserved to almost perfection, and tourists and locals alike can enjoy an afternoon exploring every nook and cranny. Some of the must visit ones include the erstwhile home of Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad, the Dholavira site, Bhadra Fort, Maratha Palace, Lothal and Jama Masjid among several others. There are tons of museums as well, which explain all about the historical importance of these monuments.

Historical Places in Gujarat

Somnath Temple - Somnath Temple is one of the most important and prominent temples of Gujarat. History defines this temple as one of the first of twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. The most recent renovation of the temple is according to Chalukya’s style of architecture. Your Gujarat trip is incomplete without visiting this peaceful and delightful temple.

Sun Temple - This temple is dedicated to God Sun, and is situated close to river Pushpvati. This temple is centuries old and is believed to be built during the rule of Bhima I of Chalukya Dynasty in 1026 AD. Today, it is considered to be a historic site and is not open for prayers or offerings.

Vijay Vilas Palace - Vijay Vilas Palace is situated in Mandvi Beach and was built 90 years ago in 1929 by Rao Vijayraj Ji. It used to be the summertime house for Jadejas of Kutch province who ruled back in those days. It is still the home of the royal family of Kutch and is one of the most majestic historical places in the state of Gujarat.

Dholavira - It is said be an excavation site which was built 4500 years ago during the Indus Valley Civilization or the Harappan culture. This site was surfaced in 1967 by Mr. J. P. Joshi and is now one of the most crucial historic places in Gujarat.

Laxmi VIlas Palace - It is the residence of the royal family of Vadodara - Gaekwad. It was constructed by Maharaja Sayaji Rao III back in 1890. The Indo-Saracenic Revival style architecture was used to design this palace and it is almost four times as big as the Buckingham Palace. Various movie scenes have been shot in the Darbar Hall of Laxmi Vilas Palace.
