Guide To Historical Monuments In Delhi
The historical significance of Delhi cannot be negated, even if the city is now better known for its industries, politics and poor air quality. The plethora of historical places in Delhi makes for an interesting excursion around the city. Having being influenced by several cultures and reigns, Delhi is a melting pot of structural beauty. Needless to say, it also gives you an insight into the grandeur and resplendence that the city once enjoyed. Most historical places in Delhi are well preserved, and can offer a chance to enjoy a delightful afternoon of exploration. Here is a list of historical places in Delhi to check out:
Qutub Minar: One of the most important, and probably one of the most popular, historical monuments in Delhi is the Qutub Minar. Its iconic image, soaring high to the sky, is sure to be reminiscent of Delhi whenever you see it again. A UNESCO World Heritage site, its construction was started in the year 1192 by Qutb ud Din Aibak, and was added to by successive rulers. It is 73 meters tall, with 5 storeys and the famous Iron Pillar, encircling which ensures good luck for life.
Humayun’s Tomb: One of the first garden tombs of the country, Humayun’s Tomb was ordered to be built by Empress Bega Begum, the first wife of Humayun. Hundreds of workers were involved in its construction, under the watchful eyes of the famed Persion father-son architect duo, Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and Sayyid Muhammad. Constructed entirely of pristine white marble and red sandstone, it was built in 1570, almost 10 years after Humayun passed away, and is a popular spot for locals and tourists to experience the grandeur that Delhi was known for.
Red Fort: A stunning example of Mughal architecture, the Red Fort is probably the most important of all historic sights in the city. It was the official residence of the Mughal emperors for almost 200 years, and is now home to several museums, a few quirky shops, and a beautiful garden area. It was ordered to be constructed by Shah Jahan, in the 17th century as the fort of his capital Shahjahanabad, which occupied the central regions of Delhi. The Sound and Light Show that is put on here every day attracts a lot of viewers, locals and tourists alike.
Old Fort: The Old Fort of Delhi is a major tourist attraction, and a crowd-puller as far as tourists go. Since there are plenty of other places to check out nearby, it is indeed a good idea to spend some time here and take in the aura of the erstwhile era of the Mughal Kings and Queens. It is truly one of the most historical buildings in Delhi and deserves its place in the hall of fame as far as Delhi attractions go.
Jantar Mantar: Another gem in Delhi’s crown is the Jantar Mantar. With its complex zodiac-based structures and a gigantic sun-dial, it is a good place to spend some time at. People like to visit with families and friends since there are other attractions to check out nearby. The grounds itself of Jantar Mantar are a good place to enjoy a few hours with the family. It is a must visit for sure, among all historical places in Delhi.
India Gate: The historical significance of India Gate cannot be negated, when talking about the best historical places in Delhi. A war memorial to commemorate the lives of over 80,000 Indian soldiers who were martyred during World War I. Designed by the much famed Edwin Lutyens, it is 42 meters high and has become an immensely popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The lush green gardens of the structure and the many eateries are a grand place to enjoy an evening.
Rashtrapati Bhavan: Located to the west of Rajpath and opposite to India Gate in New Delhi, the impressive edifice of Rashtrapati Bhavan is another amazing attraction you must visit on your Delhi excursion. Reflecting a perfect blend of European and Mughal style architecture, this sprawling place lets you dig into the history of India like no other tourist hotspot.
Delhi is full of such historical monuments, which don’t just take you back in time but also ensure that you can take a gander at one of the most culturally and historically rich capitals of the world.
