Beng Mealea in Siem Reap, Cambodia
A Forgotten Shrine that will take you back in time
Rated 4.60/5 ( based on 263 reviews )
About Beng Mealea, Siem Reap
Located 40 km east of the Angkor group of temples and 77 km from the city of Siem Reap, the Beng Mealea is also a Hindu temple built by Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. The temple is built from sandstones and has Buddhist motifs carved on its walls in a few places. The World Heritage Site has a largely unknown history other than being built by the King Suryavarman II, the temple is smaller than the main Angkor Wat temple but still larger than most in the country and has extensive carvings from the Hindu mythology.Â
Made out of sandstone, the temple itself remains largely unrestored with tree and bushes covering almost entirety of the temple and the structure lying in giant stone heaps all over the site. The architectural style is similar to Angkor Wat, and the temple itself used to be the center of a town with its own complete moat and walls. Even though the site faces east, the entrances from the other 3 sides and the site is made up of three galleries and a central sanctuary.Â
The jungle temple has become a major tourist attraction and is one of the hidden temples around Angkor wat that the majority of the tourist population did not know about before. Built on the ancient Preah Khan Kompong Svay royal highway, the temple is a great opportunity for trekking through nature to find this hidden gem of Cambodian history. The temple gives the feeling of natural reclamation, and the abandonment feels enticing for people looking to search for a piece of history itself. The piles of stone and fallen walls and structures give access to many otherwise unreachable places making this one of the most fun places to explore.
