About Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu
Changlimithang Stadium is the national stadium of Bhutan and was inaugurated in 1974. The stadium has a total capacity of 15000 and has been renovated time and again to add facilities and features to the stadium with the most recent renovation being in 2016. Located in the city of Thimphu, the stadium was built to commemorate the coronation of the 4th king of Bhutan and is an important piece of infrastructure built on a historically significant piece of land. The stadium stands on the site of the historic battle of 1885 that established the political supremacy of the first king of Bhutan, Ugyen Wangchuk. The stadium has been the site of a celebration of many other historical events such as the coronation of the 5th king of Bhutan, centenary celebration of the establishment of the house of Wangchuck and the reunification of the country.
The Changlimithang Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium and houses the Changlimithang stadium archery ground which is used for national archery competitions, the national sport of Bhutan. The stadium also has facilities for basketball, tennis, squash courts and has a large football stadium. The stadium is also the home ground for a number of domestic Thimphu based football clubs. The Bhutan Olympic Committee also uses the stadium as its headquarters. The archery stadium Thimphu has also been used for public occasions and has a unique system that allows the football pitch of the stadium to be hired out by the local people. The stadium is also the host to the Bhutan National Football team and hosts the major archery tournaments in the country.
