Guwahati is of the most developed cities of Assam. Although not the capital, it is Guwahati which connects Assam to the rest of the country. Assam shares the longest border with Bhutan among all of the Indian states, like Sikkim, West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh. The border runs from 267 kilometers. The answer of how to reach Bhutan from Guwahati is different than the usual. While in most places it is easier to take a flight, such is not the case for Guwahati. It depends on the person traveling and their priority to choose which means of transport to take. Here are the different ways to reach from Guwahati to Thimphu.

By Air: There are no direct Guwahati to Thimphu flights. Not only does Thimphu lack an airport, to travel to even Paro from Guwahati, one has to first fly to Kolkata or Bagdogra airport near Siliguri and from there take another flight to Paro. This makes traveling from Guwahati to Thimphu by air difficult.

By Road: Going from Guwahati to Thimphu by road is the easiest method. The route from Guwahati to Thimphu via Rangia takes only around 3 hours by car. The distance from Guwahati to Bhutan border is around 150 kilometers with the use of National Highway 27. One can either enter Bhutan by Gelephu or by Samdrup Jongkhar, which is closer. Guwahati to Thimphu distance is a bit more, with 495 kilometers between the two cities, which takes approximately 10 hours and 45 minutes to travel in total.

By Rail: There is no direct railway line between Thimphu and Guwahati. To travel from Guwahati to Thimphu by train, one has to take the day train or overnight train to either Siliguri or Falakata. From there they can make use of a car or taxi to travel the remaining distance to the Bhutan border and then to Thimphu.

It was an average trip. By looking at the positive reviews I expected a better service. I travelled solo and it was safe and comfortable but guide they provided was lazy and not interested. He came late one day and skipped few places. Drivers were good. On my way back to airport driver was giving mo

re information than my Bhutan guide. Guide Namgey was good on first day who had to rush for an emergency, only to be replaced by a bad guide. Their choice of hotels are not so good as they are away from the city in Thimphu and Paro. I liked Thimphu hotel though. Travel agents were helpful sometimes but I had to ask them driver and guide details multiple times which was frustrating. Sometimes there was poor or late response. I realised that the guide skipped places at the end of the tour and they stopped replying to my messages or calls without even acknowledging their mistake. They even blamed me for not informing earlier. I wasn't expecting to be cheated like this, otherwise I would have been cautious. It was my mistake ultimately according to them. They haven't acknowledged guide mistake till now. Please choose your travel agents carefully.
