Decked with a plethora of 'chatris' or cenotaphs of the Maharajas of this region, this attraction takes visitors back to the royal era. History of Bada Bagh
Built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the memory of some royal families, Bada Bagh holds its significance in the history since its construction in the 16th century. However, the tradition of constructing chhatris or cenotaphs started from the 17th century. Each cenotaph was set up as a memorial of a king or a queen post their death. The last cenotaph was built in the memory of Maharaja Jawahar Singh, who ruled the city after the independence of India. Though, its construction remains incomplete due to the sudden death of his son. And since then, the tradition of building cenotaphs was discontinued.
Structure of Bada Bagh
A beautiful big garden nestled in the midst of arid desert, Bada Bagh features a series of memorials erected in the form of royal cenotaphs. As one visits here, the charismatic view of its royal structure rising from the golden sand leaves them spellbound. The wonderfully crafted cenotaphs look glamorous even from the distance. With sculpted chhatris and beautifully carved pillars, the architecture of Bada Bagh is quite an eye-candy. Nestled along a hill, this attractions makes for an ideal backdrop for travel memories.
Attractions of Bada Bagh
Apart from the splendid cenotaphs, one of the major attractions of Bada Bagh is the awe-inspiring sunset vista that spreads its golden aura over the cenotaphs and dams, making it even more alluring. JaitSar Tank and Jait Bandh are must-visit attractions here. Enveloped in serenity, evenings spent here are full of bliss. While exploring this garden, people can also choose to visit other attractions, including Kuldhara Village, Jain Temples, Desert National Park, Khuri Sand Dunes, Jaisalmer Fort, and more.
With prevalence of history in its each cenotaph and tranquil environs, Bada Bagh in Jaisalmer is a must-visit place for both nature lovers and history buffs. Replete with golden sands and intricate carvings, its architecture is best to cherish away from the bustle of the city life.
